How Booking Works

Shared, private, and what the pickup really means

I do not sell tours, so this page is only about how the system works. Everything below is the operators' arrangement, described plainly.

Shared versus private 4x4

A shared safari means six or seven people in one 4x4, picked up from different hotels. A private safari means the car is yours, the route is roughly yours, and the pickup time is more flexible. The dunes are the same dunes. The difference is the waiting: shared pickups can mean forty minutes of hotel stops before you even leave the city.

If you are a couple and the budget matters, shared is fine. If you have children, or you are six people, private usually costs about the same per head and is a much calmer evening.

Pickup windows

Pickup is usually between 2:30 and 4:00 in the afternoon, depending on where your hotel is and how far the camp is. The operator gives you a window, not a time, and the driver calls when he is close. The number you give at booking is the number he will call — make sure it works in the UAE.

The drive out is forty-five to ninety minutes. The drive back is the same, and you are usually back at the hotel between nine and ten at night. Anyone who promises you "back by eight" has not driven the Lahbab road at night.

E-tickets

Most operators send a booking confirmation by email or WhatsApp, with a QR code. The driver checks it at pickup; the camp checks it at the gate. You do not need paper. Turn the screen brightness up and have the message open before the car arrives.

Bookings are made by the operators, not by me. The official Dubai tourism site is here. I have no affiliate deal with anyone.
